Energy and delay trade-off of the GTS allocation mechanism in IEEE 802.15.4 for wireless sensor networks

چکیده
The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol proposes a flexible communication solution for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPAN) including wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It presents the advantage to fit different requirements of potential applications by adequately setting its parameters. When in beaconenabled mode, the protocol can provide timeliness guarantees by using its Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) mechanism. However, power-efficiency and timeliness guarantees are often two antagonistic requirements in wireless sensor networks. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and propose a methodology for setting the relevant parameters of IEEE 802.15.4-compliant WSNs that takes into account a proper trade-off between power-efficiency and delay bound guarantees. First, we propose two accurate models of service curves for a GTS allocation as a function of the IEEE 802.15.4 parameters, using Network Calculus formalism. We then evaluate the delay bound guaranteed by a GTS allocation and express it as a function of the duty cycle. Based on the relation between the delay requirement and the duty cycle, we propose a power-efficient superframe selection method that simultaneously reduces power consumption and enables meeting the delay requirements of real-time flows allocating GTSs. The results of this work may pave the way for a power-efficient management of the GTS mechanism in an IEEE 802.15.4 cluster.

An Energy Efficient Clustering Method using Bat Algorithm and Mobile Sink in Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of sensor nodes with limited energy. Energy efficiency is an important issue in WSNs as the sensor nodes are deployed in rugged and non-care areas and consume a lot of energy to send data to the central station or sink if they want to communicate directly with the sink. Recently, the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is employed as a low-power, low-cost, and low rat...

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is able to achieve lowpower transmissions in low-rate and short-distance Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs). It supports a Guaranteed Time Slots (GTSs) allocation mechanism for time-critical and delay-sensitive data transmissions. However, the inflexible FirstCome-First-Served (FCFS) GTS allocation policy and passive deallocation mechanism significantly impair ne...

In this paper we analyze the performance of 802.15.4 Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and derive the queue size trade off for different modulation schemes like: Minimum Shift Keying (MSK), Quadrature Amplitude Modulation of 64 bits (QAM_64) and Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) at the radio transmitter of different types of devices in IEEE 802.15.4 for WSN. It is concluded that if queue size at the...
متن کاملAn optimal GTS scheduling algorithm for time-sensitive transactions in IEEE 802.15.4 networks
IEEE 802.15.4 is a new enabling standard for low-rate wireless personal area networks and has been widely accepted as a de facto standard for wireless sensor networking. While primary motivations behind 802.15.4 are low power and low cost wireless communications, the standard also supports time and rate sensitive applications because of its ability to operate in TDMA access modes. The TDMA mode...

This paper presents a Fast Forward MAC layer designed for hard real-time applications in wireless sensor networks. This protocol is an enhancement to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard MAC layer proposed for Low-Rate Personal Area Network. The energy conservation mechanism proposed by the current standard is quite efficient and very flexible. This flexibility comes from the ability to configure differe...
